Album Review

UNHERZ from Germany play Heavy Metal / Hard Rock according to their creed “We live our lives and do what we please!“. ‘Herzschlag’ (Heartbeat) is their second album, following on ‘Unherzlich Willkommen’ in 2010. Except singing in German they don’t offer anything new to the genre and even singing in German is nothing really new, so well, I am really at a struggle to say what new they bring to the Heavy Metal’s table. In fact, it feels so many times heard-it-all-before (and better) that I’ve struggled listening to it. If I at least felt that they’ve had a lot of fun making their music, but it feels a half-hearted effort. OK, the lyrics are said to be sarcastic, but being in German, that’s a miss with me and for the rest of those who have either only rudimentary knowledge or none at all of it. The album doesn’t really enthuse me enough to get an instinctive feel of it or to look into the lyrics closer. Maybe they’ve rushed to make another album too fast, with only one year between each other, a common mistake of many bands and that answers its weaknesses.

There are few songs that I’d managed to at least like a bit and stood out for me from what I felt was its generic mediocrity - ‘Die Hölle muss schön sein’ (“Hell Must Be Beautiful) with it being a ballad and having quite a good atmosphere. ‘Die Stimme tief in mir’ (The Voice Deep Inside Me) with its pre-run to this ballad. And that’s about it. For the rest to just speak about some songs... ‘Rette mich’ (Save Me) though I felt that they’ve took other band’s songs (METALLICA is one that comes to mind most strongly), threw them into their own pot and brewed their own version, nothing new under the Sun feeling, yet again, so what is left to enjoy is only the strength of the refrain if one feigns to be an amnesiac. ‘Prall und Kugelrund’ (Stout and Tubby) tried to sound Punk-ish and fun, but it’s only fun in that terrible sense of déjà vu... though at least it’s fun, right? The bonus track is just in the very same vein, in fact within one listen they sound like one another. Considering its title ‘20.000 Freunde’ (20,000 Friends) makes one at least think of it maybe as a witty / ironic commentary on social networking trends.

They can play what the please but it didn’t please me much, of course it can be argued that you can’t please everyone, but times are hard and we’re all strapped for cash. I wouldn’t recommend parting with it on this band’s account.
