Die Krupps, Buried Time, In Case Of Fyr

‘Die Krupps’ are still celebrating their 25th stage anniversary and this time they invited to their show in the Matrix in Bochum with two support acts. Later we recognized how great the combination of metal, rock and EBM can be.

In Case Of Fyr

It’s a band from Hanover, Germany. You should get your own impression about their music. Metal Core? Nu Metal? Alternative? New Rock? A little bit of everything? If you like to put them in a category, put them into “Rock On Fyr”. http://www.incaseoffyr.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/incaseoffyr

Music

Everything began with a siren. This was the first thing we heard. Should this warn us? Did they want to warn us that we could expect the next 30 minutes a harder music direction? That was what we got! You could think now - because we were on a concert of electronic heroes - that the harder sound we mean was maybe a harder sound of EBM. No, we are talking here about straight and pure metal music to bang your head off. A completely other direction. I don’t want to commit myself, if ‘In Case Of Fyr’ are playing Death Metal, Progressive Rock or whatever, but their sound has much power. If there was someone of the EBM music lover who couldn’t stand this kind of music, he has spent this time definitely at the bar, but the general reaction of the audience was very good and all seemed to enjoy it. Also the band seemed to have fun because singer Cookie mentioned that they were playing in Bochum in front of more people than in their hometown Hannover. The guys were playing with joy. Whether you knew ‘In Case Of Fyr’ or not - there was one song everyone could join in to sing along: it was a great cover version of ‘Dancing With Tears In My Eyes’ - a classic from the 80ies. So sometimes in a case of fire and if it burns on stage – don’t call the fire brigade – just keep on moshing!

Performance
The siren pre-warned us already that we can expect a harder sound, the shirt of the singer Cookie (there was written 666 Gothenburg on his back) and a devil on the shirt of guitarist Kay was just another confirmation. The audience stood still in a safe distance to the stage.  A towel with the logo of the football club Werder Bremen with signatures was hanging at the drums - so beside the music, football must take also an important role in their lives. The guys were making jokes like “you have to go through this now”, because no one really expected metal as support for ‘Die Krupps’. But ‘In Case Of Fyr’ rocked the house and the people also started with banging their heads. The guys were jumping up and down also on the speaker boxes and run around. At least one girl was screaming when Cookie asked if there is someone out there who still believes in true love, before they played ‘Unbreakable Love’.

Buried Time

‘Buried Time’ has seen the light of day in 1998 and enjoy ever growing popularity and success. Musically they range in-between the modern genres of Rock. They stood on stage with bands like ‘Anathema’, ‘Darkseed’ and ‘Clan of Xymox’ before or just in May with ‘Garden Of Delight’ as well here in the Matrix. Today they had the pleasure to join ‘Die Krupps’ on stage and I bet they were quite nervous too see how the EBM fans will react to their music. After 15 months of hard and intensive work ‘Innocence Gone’ - the 4th album - was finished and has been released on 21st of April 2006. For 2007, a tour through Germany is planned. http://www.buried-time.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/listentoburiedtime

Music
It was again time for rock, but much softer than before with ‘In Case Of Fyr’. The first thing I thought when the guys started to play was: Welcome ‘Paradise Lost’. I’m not sure if they hate to read that or if they are proud of that. I think they can be proud of that because ‘Paradise Lost’ is a great band, though I can imagine ‘Buried Time’ want to impress with their own style of music. Which they absolutely do, but the comparison is unavoidable. Singer Alex has a different voice than Nick Holmes and most of the time they have a heavier sound than ‘Paradise Lost’ have in the meantime. Their music is rock mixed with electronic elements and fantastic melodies. They had some problems with the drums, but nevertheless it was a joy to listen. In the recent edition of the Metal Hammer magazine they are the “Heroes of tomorrow” and “Demo of the month”, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed their story will keep on growing.

Performance
The next rock performance which the EBM fans in the audience seemed to enjoy as well. There was also no doubt about it, why not. Because the music was great, they encouraged the people to clap their hands and there were again many banging heads. Just the way it should be. It was a joy for eyes and ears and if someone says it is impossible to enjoy metal, rock and EBM during one evening, let me tell you – it is absolutely possible!

Die Krupps

‘Die Krupps’ are a German electro punk, EBM- and Crossover band formed in 1980 by Jürgen Engler and Ralf Dörper in Düsseldorf. Their initial sound throughout the 1980s combined synthesizers with metallic percussion. In 1992 they began to use guitars and more sounds derived from heavy metal music, with the release of their album ‘I’. The band continued in this vein through the 1990s. After the release of the heavily metal-influenced album ‘Paradise Now’ in 1997, the band split up.

But as real musicians also the Krupps couldn’t leave the music behind them. After this break of several years, in 2005 they spread the news around the world that they are back again and now in 2006 they are celebrating their 25-year stage anniversary. http://www.myspace.com/diekrupps

Music
It was like everyone loved it. It was nearly the same setlist as in January when they played in the Kulturfabrik in Krefeld, but that didn’t matter. They played all these songs we loved their music for, if it was ‘High Tech Low Life’, ‘Germaniac’, ‘Volle Kraft’, ‘Der Amboss’ or ‘To The Hilt’ and ‘Metal Machine Music’. It’s the fantastic combination of electronics, guitars and the use of things like hitting on steel to give this special sound to that kind of music. The music is still different and nothing you would maybe ever find in the Top Ten of the music charts. But it always had and still has this something special touch which just has to be loved by the people who are into electronic music. As ‘Die Krupps’ belong to a small group of highly influential bands who pioneered electronic & post-industrial music, we hopefully can celebrate with them the next 25 years!

Performance
The first thing we recognized on stage was that the emblem of ‘Die Krupps’ - the three circles - was crossed out. We wondered why. Later we were told there were some trouble with the company “Thyssen Krupp” (where the band have the name from) and they are not allowed to use it anymore. Trouble after 25 years – strange world, but not unusual in the business world today. Times changed. The most performance during that gig happened in front of the stage: it was the audience. Right from the start everyone was so crazy and hot to listen to their all time favourite electronic band, it was amazing. Everyone was banging and stamping to the beat and it was like everyone let his last frustration, if there was some, out. The Matrix turned to a club full of sweating people. This energy you could also see on stage. The greatest moment came when Jürgen Engler hit the “Steelophon” and all he reached with that was that the people wanted more and more. Later Jürgen also jumped up and was standing on the “steelophon”. Jürgen asked if there is someone in the audience who is working for Thyssen Krupp. But there wasn’t anyone. The stuff of that company maybe don’t even know what great music you can just make with the steel they are producing.
