Introduction

Strapping young lad, The band formed around musical genius and workaholic, Devin Townsend, is back again. After de the release of Alien in 2005, this year it was time for something new. And we got it. ‘The New Black’ will officially be released in Europe around July the 17th. When I received this disc I was very curious to see how the Lads did this time. The band is know for their great shows, and for Devin’s brains that seemed to have formed completely around metal.

Song Review

01. Decimator - 2:53
First song is a fast song, sets the standard for the rest of the CD. Features both Devin’s grunts and screams and also his more classical voice. It’s a diverse song, sometimes the typical Strapping young lad shows.

02. You Suck 2:40
Second song starts immediately after the first one, no pause. This song really makes you want to scream along to, especially when you’re pissed off at the world. Song is different from the first one.

03. The Anti-product 3:56
Has even more grind influences, different rhythms, its later on in the song there’s a solo with a few jazzy (!) instruments, which actually songs very good.

04. Monument 4:11
This song, with its typical sounds and beats reminded me of Pain, the first time I heard it. It has his own typical SYL sounds, this song had e few moments that gives Devin a chance to really sing

05. Wrong Side (of the head) 3:34
Also hardly a pause, slamming right into the next song, the song itself has a real aggressive undertone; it makes it hard not to scream along to this in my room. The keys give the song a bit of a spooky image.

06. Hope 5:02
It starts out with a applause, like it’s a live performed song, Which it isn’t, the songs get harder and more grinding as we go along. After a while it’s like listening to an espresso-machine. The song is strong, but it’s a bit too long… yeah, yeah we know!

07. Far beyond Metal 4:56
Well, I can tell you, you can hear the different influences of music in this song which makes it a very strong and well balanced song. It keeps you rocking your head without making it boring.

08. Fucker 3:53
This is a hard song. Listening to the lyrics the song is quite funny in a aggressive way. The song itself it quite simple. Metal to the bone, it makes me want to run around the room and smash things!

09. Almost again 4:34
Is a bit clearer, has an almost industrial feeling to it. It’s a very good song to slam pit around to.

10. Polyphony 1:52
Slow intro, kind of lingers in the air, until the drums show up and give the song some more body with an almost ritualistic sound, and continues with…

11. The new Black 6:16
This song, the last song on this album. This song a bit slower, the drums really forms the main line in the music, then the music shifts to a more grind-core feel, and at this stage it kind of sounds like the CD is broken. It’s a smashing tune but could use some more diversity. Eventually the metal slides of a bit and slowly this CD has come to and end. 6.16.

Conclusion

After Alien, the guys from Strapping Young Lad had to try to do better. Proof they could outdo themselves, again. With this album I will not say they have. It’s a good album, it’s not the best. But this album is divers, it’s strong, makes you want to scream along with the songs. It makes you want to move. And it’s a very good preparation for Strapping Young Lad live. And THAT’S something you should see.
