Girls under Glass, The Fair Sex

I´ve seen this combination - The Fair Sex and Girls under Glass - several years before together in the Odeon in Münster. It was a great concert and so I was looking very much forward to see these two bands together again. You cannot say that there was a main act and a support band this evening. Both bands were somehow the headliners and played equally long. The concert took place in the small club of the Kulturfabrik in Krefeld, one of my most visited and favourite concert locations.

The Fair Sex

The Fair Sex linger in a world of synths, guitars and big beats reminiscent of the Industrial movement from the mid '80s. TFS was one of the first bands ever to crossover electronics with guitars back in the mid 1980's. It amuses the band that the current electro industrial genre is stressing the use of mixing electronics and guitars as if a contradiction. As a pioneer of this trend TFS's past decade of work demonstrates how inspiring it has been to work on both sides of the spectrum.
The Fair Sex are: Myk (vocals), Rascal (bass/vocals), Blonder (keyboard) and Kullf (guitar); additional live musicians: Lydia and Lawrence

Music

The steady band member Rascal wasn´t with the band, probably because of the stress he has with his side project "Rotersand". He was replaced through Lydia on bass who was the eye catcher for the boys in the audience. Lawrence completed the live line up on a second guitar. Even though there were not that many people attending the concert, the band started with the power as if they´d played in front of hundreds of people. A nice cross section through the producing of the band enjoyed the audience.

Performance

The stage was not really big so it was quite crowded there with 5 people. The main point of attendence was of course Myk with his expressive performance... shouting into the micro or crawling on the floor. Several times he was searching a closer contact to the audience so he was jumping from the stage and was singing inbetween the people. There were some die hard fans but most of the people were quite calm and added only a shy applause after the songs. As the main show was over, the band went out. But there were only a few shouts for an encore so Blonder came out to animate the audience and  then they seemed to wake up. So the band played 2 additional songs. I always love to see TFS live... reminds my of my youth.

Girls under Glass

"The year is 2004 A.D. ... Girls Under Glass, founded in 1986 are still alive. The actual Lineup of the Hamburg – Germany based Electro-Industrial-Gothic-Band is: Volker Zacharias aka Zaphor - Vocals & Guitars, Hauke Harms – Electronics, Axel Ermes – Bass, Guitars & Noises. The alternative scene has changed much over the past two decades; more and more bands have proved that their idea of crossing and melting different elements in music - from Metal through Electro -Trance to Industrial can be successful. Girls Under Glass have always been innovators of musical openness and known for their overlapping mixture of styles since G.U.G's founding in 1986."

Music

Heiko, who also supports bands like "De/Vision" or "In strict confidece" live on stage, was behind the additional live guitar. Girls under Glass surely can be called exceptional with their mixture of electronic sounds and guitars. The lyrics change between German and English. Of course they played a lot of songs from the actual album "Zyklus", like the fast sold out single "Ohne Dich". But also very early longs - like "Humus" - were belonging to the set. The sound seemed a bit too loud for my ears; or was it only because I had a cold?

Performance

The concert was a bit like a privat concert - a very intimate atmosphere and a lot talking between the audience and the band. Even though the club was so small, the lights were much better then expected. Additional scanners were fitting very well to the mood of the songs. Volker was completely absorbed in his music while Axel seemed to merge with his intrument. My personal favourite was once again "When I think about you" - a very intense song that makes you move your feet. People were a bit more vivid and demanded an encore which was of course given.
