Yngwie Malmsteen

Yngwie Who ? Yngwie F#CKING Malmsteen that’s who!

The mighty Viking returns to the Netherlands for his "Unleash The Fury" tour, and show the world he’s still racing away on his Fender strat. And his loyal fans have been waiting for it, and they brought a few new ones to watch Malmsteen do what he does best. Though he brought some skilled musicians to accompany him on this tour all eyes were still on Malmsteen or where he should be when he walked backstage. The devotion of heavy metal fans is admirable.

Music
After emerging on a smoke filled stage, Malmsteen opened with Rising Force, immediately getting the crowd worked up and kept them like that the entire night. And yet again you’ve got to give credit to the other musicians that were on stage, they really kept it all together. They really made the big difference between his solo’s and the songs. For me the highlight was You Don’t Remember, I’ll Never Forget.

The singer was doing a hell of a job, really putting the emotion it needed in it. A great singer who could easily be front man of a band. There was also a short keys-solo and a drum-solo, the only one who didn’t have moment in the spotlight was the bass player. But none of the solo’s really impressed the audience, who were looking for Malmsteen who was backstage during these solo’s.

This was still Malmsteens show. Throughout most songs he improvised constantly, even adding some fast licks between the occasional riffs he plays, or not playing anything but just picking the open strings so he can then just abuse his tremolo again. But that’s about all there is to say about Malmsteens playing, he played amazingly as always, most of the crowd probably couldn’t even hear a single mistake he made.

Too bad most of his improvisations end up being the same licks only slightly different but since oddly enough there weren’t too many guitar players in the audience everybody kept cheering him on. The thing that did bother me a lot was when the singer was talking to the audience Malmsteen started playing a song so he had to stop and accept they were going to play already. Also during 'You Don’t Remember, I’ll Never Forget' he started playing through a beautiful vocal melody, which totally ruined that moment for me.

But he made up for it by playing the entire rhythm part of 'Dreaming' in the beginning instead of improvising or playing the lead (and off course played on his nylon stringed guitar). An amazing show containing some of the greatest Malmsteen songs and some new ones of the new upcoming album "Unleash The Fury".
Though in my humble opinion he shouldn’t sing anymore, it ruined some parts of the songs and well he hasn’t got the voice to back up the kind of singer his songs take.

The sound this evening was really good, I had my earplugs in and still had a great sound nothing was really lost in the mix, though the vocals could have been a bit louder.

Some of the well known songs of the evening:

Rising Force
Far Beyond The Sun
Guitar Solo based on The Trilogy Suites
You Don’t Remember, I’ll Never Forget
Dreaming (Tell Me)
Adagio
Baroque & Roll
Liar

Performance
Though he has aged quite a bit, you couldn’t really tell from the enthusiasm and energy he displays on stage. Running around, throwing his strat around, constantly throwing picks in the audience (I wonder if I’m the only one who didn’t catch one) and off course the heavy metal poses for pictures. And the crowd loved every second of it. Off course he wasn’t the only one on stage drawing attention, both the drummer and singer had some tricks of their own on stage but didn’t try to steal the show. Which would be impossible anyway since besides all eyes were on Malmsteen he was clearly dominant in the sound mix so "all ears" were on him as well. Though after playing such a long set, a lot of his moves were becoming kind of "cheesy" to me, after seeing a guitarist constantly doing the same tricks both musically and physically it gets old.......

The light was decent, but red was really used too much, I would have liked to see more variation in the colours, but the light played a big part in some of the songs as well, really emphasizing the right atmosphere.
