Trail of Tears

On a cold an sometimes rainy day a crowd gathered outside the new Patronaat in Haarlem to see the last concert of the mini tour of Trail of Tears. This mini tour was to let us know they are still around and they will be back again once their new album is released. Playing us a mixture of their latest album and the ‘Dimension of Might’ album they gave a strong performance through which they definitely made sure they will be more then welcome on their next tour.

After a fun night in Utrecht it was time for Trial of Tears to wake up again and hit the stage. They were playing alone because Orphanage who would originally open for them had split up just this week. There were even some Orphanage t-shirts worn… But still most of the audience was here for their favourite band, Trail of Tears. Some had even seen all their shows on this tour, the band especially thanked them for this.

Music
It is a pleasure to see Ronnie sing for he shows so many emotions on his face and in his voice (you can even see the emotions of the lyrics of Kjetil in Ronnies face). With Kjetil this differed by the song, mostly the new songs which were of course written for his voice made it possible for him to put his emotions in to it, especially during ‘Face of Jealousy’ this stood out. Songs from ‘Dimension of Might’ did very well, they sounded great and the adaptations made for Kjetils voice were very good and the songs kept their power. They played the only cover song they do ‘Caffeine’ of Faith no More. The latest song of their encore was ‘Carrier of the Scars of Life’ which is a personal favourite of the band, it brings a great combination of heavy music and grunts in contrast with the vocals of Kjetil. Both high and low sounds were well balanced in the sound mix.

Performance
When they entered the stage they got a warm welcome but during the first song it appeared that the audience did need a warming up. That is of course the trouble of playing without a opening act. This changed during the show, heads started banging and sometimes even a mosh pit arose in the middle of the audience (be it a small one). Kjetil was walking on and off the stage for sometimes there were long breaks for him. There was no front light, and often there was so much light on stage that the band disappeared in a sea of light. Ronnie tells us we were a great crowd and the audience let them know they are a great band!
