Unheilig

A band playing in such a small venue and still people from Germany and even England come to see them there, quite special. After seeing them live I could understand; there is just something about them…

Unheilig was founded in 1999 by Grant Stevens (songwriter of “Everlasting Friends” from the Holsten Pilsener TV spot) and José Alvarez-Brill (Wolfsheim, Witt, De/Vision) and of course Der Graf who is the front man of Unheilig.

Music
With only three men on stage Uheilig performed a great set of their songs. Many from the new album, which was well know already for the audience could sing along, especially songs as ‘Helden’ and ‘Ich Will Alles’ were favourites of the audience. There are the dark beats, the key melodies and then the warm voice of Der Graf to complete it. All songs are danceable, though some are slower then others. The performance ended with a slow song, very sensitive vocals to the tune of a piano, ‘Mein Stern’.

Performance
The stage was decorated with a backdrop depicting a large clock and in front of that there were many candles. This all gave the stage a dark and mysterious look, although the lack of lighting added to that as well. The show started with the sounding of a bell and then we heard a voice, it was not clear what it said but it suited the atmosphere very well. When Der Graf entered the stage the show was off to a start. He is definitely the leader of the band (the others were often hidden in the dark or in smoke). He doesn’t just sing his songs, he performs. With his shocking body en white eyes he hypnotizes the audience. During the show more and more people started to dance and the show was a success, at the end they thanked us for a great evening and the clapped along with us. After the show they came to the merchandise stand for autographs and a word with their fans.
