Saltatio Mortis

There are some Medieval-Rock bands in Germany and one of the hardest working ones is ‘Saltatio Mortis’. The band from the Southwest released their last album in august 2005 and is on tour now. During the interview we already get to know that Alea torments a cold and thus we worried a little about the concert. Nevertheless, this worry was absolutely groundless.

Music
‘Saltatio Mortis’ concentrated as expected on the last album ‘Des Königs Henker’ (‘Of the king's hangman’) which was nearly completely roofed. Here in spite of the textual melancholy the pieces invited rather to the celebration. Only the romantic song ‘Mondlicht’ (‘moonlight’) was lit up by sparklers. It’s been a long time since someone supported this tradition. Lasterbalk and Falk are living in Karlsruhe, so they have had their own fans in the crowd. But the fans had to work hard to convince Alea. They knew every word - even the difficult French song ‘Dessous Le Ponte De Nante’. Lasterbalk betrayed the story behind the song. It’s dedicated to one of Falk’s love affairs. Lasterbalk thought that the next one ‘Cantiga Alhambra’ was a song about drinking and stuff like that. In fact this one is a ‘real holy church-song’. So we learned a lot of historical facts during this evening.

Performance
Although he had this bad cold, Alea was in a really good mood. He entered the stage with ‘Tritt ein’ (‘step in’) and immediately snatched the audience. Nearly two hours ‘Saltatio Mortis’ were rocking the Substage. As always the stage was a little bit too small for the band. Above all Lasterbalk and Ungemach suffered from the low ceiling. Ungemach had to kneel for playing his instrument and Lasterbalk had to hold his head down behind the drums. He is about two meters tall and that’s nearly too much for the Substage. With his cold Alea, did a really good job and the band played four encores. The half filled Substage proved that you don’t need masses of fans to rock the house.
