Live Review: Area4 Festival - Lüdinghausen 2012 (Day 1)

Area4 Festival Day 1: Social Distortion, Neaera, Heaven Shall Burn, Sondaschule, Donots, Saves the Day, Boysetsfire, Darkest Hour, The Joy Formidable, Polar Bear Club, Touché Amoré, Pulled Apart by Horses, Montreal, We are the Ocean

When the sun was burning down and loud guitars were sounding over the plains of the Münsterland, the guitar-affine festival crowd of around 16,000 fans has gathered on the tranquil airfield Borkenberge to celebrate in the “biggest living room of North-Rhine-Westphalia”. As rainy the summer was before, usually the Area4 Festival in Lüdinghausen hast best weather and the sun is shining. Since 2007 it just looks like the weather god likes it hot and sweaty. And so, the biggest living rooms turned somehow into the loudest baking oven with temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius. So, not only beer flowed freely, also sweat did.

The seventh Area4 Festival (te first edition was taking place already in 2005 as a 1-day festival in Oberhausen before the festival moved to the airfield Borkenberge) was opened by WE ARE THE OCEAN from Essex/UK, presenting Post-Hardcore for the first people joining them at the festival area at 15:00. The line-up during the day was quite diversified, with my personal first highlight being THE JOY FORMIDABLE. The DONOTS later on the main stage were another highlight and drew in my opinion more people than the bands playing past them. Well, they had a home match, playing already for the third time at Area4 Festival. In April, the guys “with the shortest ride to the festival”, living close by nearby Münster, released their ninth studio album ‘Wake The Dogs’. The delivered an exciting show indeed!



In my opinion, DONOTS delivered the best show of the day. Fans of Metalcore band HEAVEN SHALL BURN from Thuringia might see it different. The also delivered an exciting show. We were also looking forward the show of SOCIAL DISTORCIAN, but than they or their management served us a bitter pill: an oppressive contract we did not sign of course. As even promoters told us, we shouldn’t sign it because we would “sell our soul”. All photographers decided not to sign it and not to take any pics of the band meaning an early home time for us.
