Metal Dayz Hamburg Day 1: Beyond The Black, Kryptos, Dark Tranquillity, Edguy, Any Given Day
Next to the late summer festival Reeperbahn festival, there is also a place for lovers of the harder music genre: for the third time, the Metal Dayz took place in the Markhalle in Hamburg. On two days, different Metal bands are performing on the stage of the big room. In the other hall, readings, workshops, comedy and expert rounds are given in the meantime. Also almost every band and writer is going to take an hour for signing and talking with their fans.
Beyond the Black
With some minutes delay, BEYOND THE BLACK opened the Metal Dayz 2014. The so called "Female Fronted" Metal band from Northern Germany had their third gig ever on this evening and they had even performed in Wacken this year. Singer Jennifer Haben is only 19 years old, but has a voice you want to listen to for hours. Very powerful and straightway clean, she shows how unique this band and genre is in Germany until now. Next to heavy guitars sounds and loud drums, there is also an, in places, calm song which is accompanying with Haben on the guitar. After almost half an hour and five songs, the magic is already over. Unfortunately, even if the time was very short, there was almost no interaction with the audience. Kryptos
Coming all the way from India, KRYPTOS were ready to enter the stage. The band was formed in 1998, but until 2012, only three albums were published. In 45 minutes, eight songs were performed. The four-man band (Nolan Lewis at vocals and guitars, Rohit Chaturvedi for guitars, Ganesh Krishnaswamy at the bass and drummer Anthony Hoover) mixes up traditional melodic metal with thrash out of the 80's and that, you cannot only hear, but see. Hard sounds like promised where underlined by a never ending banging of heads on the stage. Dark Tranquillity
The first of the main acts on the first day was the Melodic Death Metal band DARK TRANQUILLITY from Sweden. The hall was filled up to the last rows, but still it was very breezy. DARK TRANQUILLITY calls sounded through the hall between every song, and the guys came along with nine of them. Singer Mikael Stanne was visible in a very good mood and came to the edge of the stage, to reach them fans his hands. Even in a little technically accident meanwhile the third song, the fans still were clapping along and Stanne outplayed it perfectly. Even the first mosh-pits started. But it took a while, until also the sound of the microphone was perfectly again, in some parts, the voice sinks between all the guitar sounds. The guys around Stanne, Niklas Sundin at the guitars, bassist Martin Henriksson, Martin Brändström for keyboards and Anders Jivarp for drums had one hour to give all their best - and did it. Edguy
It took a wait of 45minutes, until the second headliner finally came on stage. With blue lights, a long intro and very excited fans, EDGUY opened their show with one of the most popular songs, ‘Love Tyger’. Following song ‘Space Police’, singer Tobias Sammet lost the receiver of his microphone, but sings and runs unflustered along, the rowdy almost had no chance to fix it. "Hoping, it sounds fairly okay", Sammet finally stopped for getting his receiver back. After this little repair, the show could go on without any unintentional falls between. The Power Metal band from Fulda in Germany was performing before many, many of their fans, who sang and danced along through the whole show. Any Given Day
ANY GIVEN DAY was the only band on this night who did not play in the big room of the Markthalle, but in the smaller hall MarX. Also, the guys from Gelsenkirchen, started a bit later, but played at the same time as EDGUY in the hall next to them. But ANY GIVEN DAY bring along something for all who do not have much to do with the Rock'n'Roll of EDGUY: finest Metalcore with powerful voices, extra hard guitars and a highly motivated band, consisting of Dennis Diehl (vocals), Andy Posdziech (guitar), Dennis Ter Schmitten (guitar), Michael Golinski (bass) and Raphael Altmann (drums). The fan community in the MarX is also small, but just as motivated to go along for some mosh pits. The giant of a man Diehl dominated his fans, when he stands up to the bank on the edge of the small stage. Like it would belong to good sound, ANY GIVEN DAY covered also, like some other Metalcore bands, and popular song out of the charts: their victim was RIHANNA's ‘Diamonds’, which sounded better at lengths than the original song. Washed out in 45min, the fans left the first day of Metal Dayz. EDGUY was still playing their last song, when the lights in the MarX already went out. // http://www.anygivenday.eu // Rating 7 / 10
