With Full Force Day 2: LAMB OF GOD, CALIBAN, AMON AMARTH, CHILDREN OF BODOM and KNORKATOR

After a short and cold night, day two arrived. I sat down on my chair in front of my tent and - as every morning - CALIBAN went by and said a friendly “Good morning”. I was at the With Full Force Festival. This day promised to be good. And so, although I wasn’t really awake up to that point, I was looking forward for all the upcoming bands.

LAMB OF GOD

LAMB OF GOD was formed in 1990 when Mark Morton, Chris Adler, and John Campbell were floor mates at Virginia Commonwealth University. Their lyrical themes tend to cover religion, society, pain, misery, politics, and heresy, as well as other often personal topics. Their newest album, ‘Sacrament’, was met with immediate success, debuting at #8 on the U.S. Billboard charts. The same day ‘Sacrament’ was released, the band's fan club “The Congregation” was launched. Lamb of God has been nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" for the song ‘Redneck’ from Sacrament in 2006 for the 49th annual Grammy Awards.

Music
They were the first band I saw that day and their hardcore music really got through my ears early in the morning. At least, for me it was early in the morning. Their riffs were good, his voice was strong and the songs were hard as always. If you like hardcore, you will love this band. Every song sounds different which isn’t always the case in the hardcore seen of today’s music. Really good concert after all!

Performance
“Lookin’ pretty good” – that’s what I thought when they entered the stage of the WFF. Although I didn’t know how they were gonna perform since I’ve never seen them live, I was excited about the upcoming concert. Listening to their CDs, I always thought a concert of them would be awesome and actually, it was! They showed their best and had a really good performance. They played with the audience and talked to us all the time which gave a really nice impression of the band.

CALIBAN

CALIBAN was formed in Hattingen, Germany in 1997 under the name NEVER AGAIN. After six months of playing together, the band recorded their first two songs for a demo, which was never released. The songs were sent to several record labels, and Lifeforce Records was the first to offer the band a record deal. The band's first self-titled EP came out in the summer of 1998. CALIBAN recorded their 2007 album ‘The Awakening’ with producer Benny Richter, and was released in Germany on May 25.

Music
After this concert, I really have to say, I love that band! And even my boyfriend starts liking them. Their music is really full of tense and just great melodies put together with his screaming. I just stood there and was amazed by their music and how they delivered their own kind of mood on stage. Just great!

Performance
A guy came up the stage and he didn’t look like one from CALIBAN. Looking into the audience, you could see that nobody knew what was going on. He asked for a girl to come up stage and she came up. Then, he asked her if she wanted to marry him and of course, she agreed and the whole audience started clapping. He took off with her with the sentence: “Now, I’m gonna do my own wall of death!”

Covered in blood, CALIBAN entered the stage. I was excited to see them perform live because I’ve only heard good stuff about them. His make-up was put on perfectly, like always. And I have to say, CALIBAN gave one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. The music was great, his voice at its top and the performance was just awesome. You could see they had a lot of fun standing on stage. After the first two songs, they started their typical so-called “wall of death”. They had two rows put up and those two rows started running towards each other at one certain point. After all, their performance was just awesome!

AMON AMARTH

AMON AMARTH is a Viking-themed melodic death metal band from Sweden founded in 1992 in Tumba, named after a location in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. The five Swedish musicians are known for their songs based on Norse mythology. Formed under the name SCUM, they switched to the name AMON AMARTH in 1992. With the release of the album ‘Once Sent from the Golden Hall’ in 1998 their popularity rose on an international level and since has brought forth multiple U.S. tours, four music videos, and appearances in over 100 metal magazines.

Music
Heavy guitars, nice drums and a lot of screaming and growling, called AMON AMARTH. The sound was surprisingly good. His voice was great and the whole set-up of the band was just right. All in all, it was a great concert with some really nice-looking guys.

Performance
When you think of the band AMON AMARTH, one thing comes to your mind: the stereotype of a typical metal comes true: good-looking guys with long hair and long beards. And actually, they are really good-looking. They had a huge sign put up. It was probably just one of their signs. They came on stage and the crowed screamed their lungs out. Their show was good, no doubt but basically, it was just like any other metal concert I’ve seen so far.

CHILDREN OF BODOM

CHILDREN OF BODOM is a metal band from Espoo, Finland. There is some contention regarding the band's genre classification, but in general the band's musical style can be described as a cross between melodic death metal and power metal (earlier works). Their name was derived from the Lake Bodom murders. The lyrics of CHILDREN OF BODOM songs are written in English and are most often concerned with the subjects of death / the grim reaper, personal struggles, war and the Lake Bodom murders. Recent albums have seen a shift to more antagonistic lyrics (songs such as ‘You're Better off Dead’ and ‘In Your Face’) and a more straight-forward heavy metal style.

Music
I haven’t seen them before which is pity because they were really great. The guitars weren’t always on key if you ask me but it actually didn’t matter. They played all kinds of songs from their past years which was just great because it gave you the right impression of the band.

Performance
As always, Alexi (vocals) was drunk on stage. I didn’t expect anything different so, it was ok because he was still able to play the music. Their performance was great although his talking was dominated by the word “fuck”. The lights were great and although he was drunk, he could still sing and it was just great.

KNORKATOR

KNORKATOR is a German band from Berlin that combines heavy metal with comical elements. They proclaim themselves to be "Germany's most band in the world" (German: "Deutschlands meiste Band der Welt"), as the title "The best band in the world" was already taken by DIE ÄRZTE. The band was founded in 1994 but only played in the Berlin / Brandenburg area until 1998. KNORKATOR gained further fame (and some notoriety) in 2000 with their performance of “Ick wer zun Schwein” (sic; literally, in Berlin dialect, "I'm turning into a pig") in the German national qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Music
Singing about all kinds of funny stuff, their music was just awesome. The tent stage was crowded and everybody was just singing their songs. They had all different kind of songs they played. And they also played some of my favourite songs of them like ‘Für meine Fans’ (‘For my fans’) and ‘Wir werden alle sterben’ (‘We are all gonna die’). I just loved their concert that night.

Performance
As always, KNORKATOR had the best performance. Just by looking at them, you couldn’t resist laughing. They were all dressed in white and just one guy was dressed in red, as usual. And Stumpen (vocals) was undressed by the end of the concert which didn’t surprise me because he did the same when I was at a concert of them the last time. It was just fun to look at them standing and performing on stage.
