Album Review

ASCENSION EX were formed in 2004, had had released their debut EP in 2008 and now they’ve returned with their second CD, ‘The Hand Of The Sinner’. The band describes it as “an album directed towards the qualities of alcohol, drugs, sex, and heavy music as forms of daytime-societies escape.” So is it sex, drugs and Industrial escapism? Let’s see.

The album opens with a rather astonishing intro which jumps from some distorted Mexican song to a futuristic electro what-is-it. We have at once the results of alcohol and drugs incarnated! Truth is that the second track, ‘The Hand Of The Sinner’ is an uplifting, utterly danceable song with Ayax’ vocals approaching something from ‘We Are The Sinners’ from SUICIDE COMMANDO. It doesn’t have the political associations of the latter; rather it is connected with latex fantasies. ‘Obey’ starts with an uninspired and flat electro /industrial in order to end to something that resembles DEAD CAN DANCE (!) while ‘Nothing Like Her’ makes you wonder... really? Let’s say that the song is interesting but the uniqueness of the protagonist is not credibly established and believable only if you’ve lived in a monastery for the past 20 years.

So indeed this album has these characteristics the band attributes to it. But really was this the direction ASCENSION EX wanted to take? Not only they push no boundaries whatsoever, but they offer an utterly pulp approach to their themes and have a questionable sense of fun for most of the time. The hand that is seen in their cover doesn’t have an allure of any sexual attraction; she wants to have the remote control to change the TV channel.
