Album Review

The man behind ERODE, Alexander Dietz, usually works a different genre being the guitarist of very popular German metal band HEAVEN SHALL BURN. Whatever path has led him to creating his first electronic album under the ERODE moniker we can be glad it did. The first step we make into the album, titled 'Horizon', is '10950'. Whatever the meaning behind these figures might be, on the album they stand out for a contemplative sonic landscape laid-out for the listener to lay down on, experiencing feelings of wistfulness and longing at once. The second track 'Detect' puts a little more punch into the rhythm department, spices everything up with a dreamy atmospheres that is somehow drenched with a feeling of discontent through the use of hissing, evil whispers. The next track 'Approach' lies you in on circulating, calm oscillations to present you with a crunchy beat with a textured and processed guitar melody that invokes memories of things that could never be and still hurt if you think about it.

Waves are washing up on a foreign show at the beginning of what is the album's title track You'll get carried far away by the waves, immersed by a comforting feeling of warmness by the sun that shines upon you. 'Wither' is fooling you into believing there could be a metal storm coming down on you t first; then grows to becomes of the album's most atmospheric tracks, highlighting angelic choirs. 'The beatless 'Line' is giving you an exorcise in subtle soundscaping before 'Annoy' hits the spot in adding distortion and glowing melodies to the established fabric so it's shining like an icy star in outer space. Later on a vast array of intricate break beats is added which in my opinion wouldn't have been necessary. On 'Disengage' on the other hand, the distortion-filled patterns add to the whole feel of the song, unveil an inherent strength lying in the calm depths.

The 'Kadrage RMX' of 'Horizon' puts the song into a different setting with a cavernous atmosphere gradually layered with noise and slight reminiscences to the original while ERODE's take on DEADLOCK's 'Brutal Romance' surely will leave admirers of the original speechless. There's still a metal current as backdrop but everything else's been completely replaced with complicated beats and melodies. I like that much more to be honest. Apart from occasional forays the majority of 'Horizon' is driven by the wish to turn emotions into music and not bursting into exceeding complexity while that sure has its charm sometimes. Here it just wouldn't fit the concept. The impact is still huge.
