Album Review
ACYLUM is back in order to prove the band is still at war, not only with society but with the modern music as well. Their harsh Industrial is heavier than Ruhr’s steel industries. This characteristic combined with an almost paranoiac tone of grandeur and dark to the point of creepiness offer an accurate glimpse at this CD. ‘Karzinom’ opens with ‘Haus am See’, a military marching tune befitting perfectly as the official anthem of the Bundesbank. Or maybe that should be ‘Shoot Em Up’. The former builds gradually and puts you amidst the ruins while the latter evokes as a feeling what its title suggests. In ‘Question’ you have the feeling that Dennis the Menace jumped into ‘Fiddler On The Roof’ to settle the score, while in ‘King Acylum’, the band shows its high skills, in a dark and grand song with cabaret’s theatricality to have a dominant role.
Another song that stands out in this CD is ‘Spit On Your Grave’ which has the amount of loathing and contempt expected from the song at least in terms of its title (with a hint of lyrical). As far it goes for the remixes all three of them are exceptional, with the HAUSHETAERE version of ‘Freeze’ and REAXION GUERILLA’s ‘Silence’ standing out as they add extra levels not only in terms of music but of estrangement of the original songs as well. Surely AMGOD’s remix of ‘Question’ shall push you into the dance floors. In short, the band as its usual exercises its role as an agent provocateur and in the between delivers some lessons which look like they are stolen from Antonin Artaud’s ‘Theater Of Cruelty’. Controversial and challenging as ever the ACYLUM is a band not to be missed.
