Album Review

THE AMITY AFFLICTION formed in 2002. By no means are they a band that rushes with their releases. First they dug out few demos and singles. Their debut album ‘Severed Ties’ came out in 2008 and last year ‘Youngbloods’ were released. Signed to a new label, Roadrunner, they’re squeezing out the reissue on 21st October this year before they bite into the new material (probably next year). Such run of the mill and not-much-new-in-it reissues are difficult to review as what to remark on that hasn’t been written in the reviews already (?)... and it’s not really long for one to start sounding as a salesman counting out products rather than being able to simply write out an opinion on the music and the impressions that it gives. All one is left with are the extras thrown in to the deluxe edition (not the one reviewed here but it contains two more tracks and a DVD), the quality of production (maybe some expected fine tuning)...

Well just to repeat some points already made about this album - singing is compared as improved to the first album, improvement in songwriting and drums and all instruments around - bravo... Yet still, as far as it concerns my opinion, the clean vocals give it this commercial appeal, the boy-band gone into the hard side, which I’ve always found off-putting though of course many out there digging it for just that. ‘Rip Forghorn’ has shown me that they can pull out more sincerity as it has moments when the clean vocals over the melodic parts sound more as a genuine deal. I’d have really just wished for more of that, no argument with the Screamo parts though. From the other better tracks ‘I hate Hartley’ and the last on the usual deal version ‘Fuck The Yankees’ though again for mostly the screamed/rough vocals parts again. The ferocity could have been turned up more. Re-issues as always are for the hardcore fan base and the possible new listeners who might want to check them out, but not that much interest to anyone else, including myself.
