Album Review

DAUGHTRY is a band gathered around Chris Daughtry, who is a winner of American Idol #5. ‘Break the Spell’ follows a self-titled debut and sophomore album ‘Leave This Town’. Josh Paul, who used to play bass for SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, may try to give it a harder credit and the album opens with a solid riff in ‘Renegade’ reminiscent of JUDAS PRIEST, but the rest is more a boy-band Hard Rock or metro-sexual Hard Rock. It’s just far too tidy and too pretty. After ‘Renegade’ the album also lost much of my interest as it just all became one big sludge of music - songs so much alike it was more like listening to a long-lasting song with unremarkable nuances, therefore it feels like the album has one good song and the rest is just plain boring. Yes, the vocals are not bad, the band is not bad regarding skills, but it just lacks a genuine oomph, genuine power and emotion, which makes the listening experience tedious and mediocre. Listen to it on a radio when you’re really bored, but my recommendation doesn’t go further than that.
