Album Review

CIRQUE ROYAL is a band from Germany who dedicates itself to Space-Pop, crossing dreamy but not ethereal soundscapes, mixing Rock, Pop with some psychedelic elements. What came to my mind is less stoned and at times more dynamic JESUS AND MARY CHAIN. Vocally I am somewhat reminded of OASIS, inclusive with the nod to the ‘60’s rock that OASIS had too. They tag their debut album ‘We Come In Peace’ with a slogan: “Planet earth about to be recycled. Your only chance to survive: leave with us!” In their songs they tackle the pitfalls of existence in post-globalisation times. The first few songs are truly excellent; they are more dynamic and less lulling yet still retaining the strength to be soothing at the same time - a difficult balance to achieve. I think that whoever (the band or the producer) decided to put them first did superbly. They convince you to give the band your time and attention.

Of course there are some sleepier, stonier songs too, as for example 'Rats' and the somewhere between tracks such as ‘Run’. ‘Happy’, though it is slow, it’s somewhat above those songs, it just feels it has more colour. However, this is more an issue of taste as those stonier songs are of a good quality and enjoyable. ‘The Flames That Ease Your Pain’ are more punk-rock without pretending to have an attitude that they don’t, offering enough uplift with its genre-visit, the next song ‘MNKY FRNT’ seems to stay in that territory but lean towards post-hardcore-ish elements (heavy on the bass with the creative edge to the punk) in its catchy rock mode. A truly great song, a favourite on the album together with the last ‘Passion Pulled the Trigger’ that is within the same vein. The album is tight, accomplished and as such especially it comes as a surprise this is only a debut. Enjoyable and quite excellent at that.
