Album Review

DONOTS, originating from Münster have built quite a reputation for themselves over the years and now have made the next step in their career with the new album ‘Wake The Dogs’ that starts right away with the title track, kicking it all off with a fair Western, toe-tapping attitude that is at once gripping and encouraging to rock out to it. It is followed by ‘Into The Grey’ which is rather a straightforward, pretty catchy affair. It’s a track that has that special live character that you can feel even on record. Pretty sure this will be a live favourite. ‘You’ offers mellow guitars over a meandering rhythm that comes up with great bass lines. ‘Born A Wolf’ has indeed a wild spirit inside of it, goes right in your face and takes no prisoners. ‘Control’ even goes one better and adds a few slices of electronics.

You kind of want to jump up and down to it once you’re hearing the gloomy chorus. ‘You Got It’ comes up with a proggy edge, meaning there’s an odd metric to the drums which you just can’t figure, or at least I don’t. ‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up goes the catchy way again and blends it with lots of melancholia in the melodies before ’Chasing The Sky’ puts on a heavier clothing with a bluesy undertone. The closing track ‘So Long’ features folk / punker Frank Turner and makes for a lovely ending. ‘Wake The Dogs’ had lots of energy. Nevertheless it’s still an unexcited record. The guys know what they’re doing and they enjoy themselves doing it.
