Album Review

After being absent for about for years, AURA NOIR is back with a vengeance with another slab of raw Blackened Thrash ready to engage those who are still hungry for something a little more underground and dirty compared to the mainstream stuff. Still adhering to their four year gap release, not much has changed to AURA NOIR’s style as Aggressor of VIRUS is still on guitars and vocals with Apollyon of IMMORTAL on drums and none other than the former MAYHEM guitarist Blasphemer working his magic on the frets. Everything still is mostly Thrash based with a raw Black Metal feel to it that will certainly appeal to fans of mid era DARKTHRONE, though the vocals aren’t quite is guttural or raw. Just hearing a track like ‘Fed To The Flames’ will make fans smile though because it has that hard edge that is also very catchy, blending a bit of Punk in with the aggressive throes of the Thrash. Some tracks are faster than others such as ‘Witheld’ that just crushes right through without much in the way of tremolo picking but it certainly feels like hearing a Black Metal version of EXODUS all over again with a demo tone to it, giving it a bit of a 80s/ early 90s feel.

On the downside, AURA NOIR has always been somewhat quick and one sided in their works. The music is pretty basic and standard for Black Metal/ Thrash expectations, and with not too much difference between tracks those are not hardcore believers of either genre may get somewhat bored with the music. For those expecting an album that speeds up and slows down and even throws a few unexpected curveballs that shouldn’t be part of the genre, but are still there for experimental sake, then this is not the album for them. This is just raw, primeval Blackened Thrash that doesn’t beat around the bush with an old school attitude and lives up to those who have followed AURA NOIR this far into the circles of Hell. This isn’t exactly pleasant, but surely will sate anyone who likes their Metal to sound just as grim as the Devil himself.
