Album Review

Seeing an album of a band called DARK PRINCESS as my allocated review filled me with some trepidation. I had to remind myself not to judge the album by its moniker, from which I expected something infantile, pretentious and horribly sentimental and cheesy. And on top of it with having to chase their information online you’d have to think that USSR was the winner of the Cold War and Russian was the universal language worldwide and not English. They claim to appeal to fans of WITHIN TEMPTATION, EVANESCENCE and AVRIL LAVIGNE in which case bilingual version of their sites would be desirable, you’d think...

As the album goes, it comes with a good quality, truly good vocal, be it the female or the male vocal when it joins in, music is played skilfully, strong songs (say as ‘Point of No Return’ that yields some nice guitar solos), tight songwriting. However, there’s hardly anything new, it’s the formulas of the above bands put together with some more classical heavy metal sounds (but that’s hardly anything astounding and new either) so it’s difficult to dig at anything original but also of anything distinctive of their very own sound, very own unique flavour.  Even the lyrics will leave you with a feeling you’ve heard all that before. If you want to just enjoy it within its generic nature other songs to pick out from are the beautiful balladic ‘The temple of darkness’, very evocative and the guitar work is to be commended there; ‘Paradise land’ with some folkloric elements and great interaction of female and male vocals; ‘The way of passion’ with its darker and denser tone. Enjoyable but not groundbreaking nor outstanding...
