Album Review

In A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH you’ll find Sal Absruscato of TYPE O NEGATIVE renown, joining musical forces with (amongst the other musicians of this band) Matt Brown, who collaborated with the likes of LOU REED, PETER GABRIEL and many others. Sounds like great recommendation and that will make for a great album? Right? Not quite, this album unlike its predecessor is more a disappointment. It’s more a sludgy southern rock affair this time than Goth Rock. The sludge feeling unfortunately gives it quite a boring sheen. It’s like being trapped in a small town and doing nothing but sitting in the pub where everything seems to be frozen in time, like a wasp in amber and where you get that feeling ‘I’ve seen this all before’ and the feeling is not good...no good at all. Oh look, with ‘Growing Old’ finally bit of a variation, an organ beginning and even the riff tries to grab at other grounds! Phew!

This part of the album at least shows a slight increase of life! ‘Dead of Winter’ has some acoustic effects, but it still has this zombie-like quality, actually of a zombie that can’t even be bothered to eat – you could probably just swat it like a fly before the winter. ‘Devil Came With a Smile’ has a bit more Metal approach that makes for the most outstanding song out of the album, it also has a more interesting narrative which offers a slight change to that prevailing swampy ennui feeling, which drowned out the album and made it into something I’m unlikely to return to. I’ll be judging it by its title (cover is decent) – ‘Lay My Soul To Waste’ – it will certainly waste something of your life and bore your soul to death.
