Album Review

For me, 2013 so far has been a year lacking really mind-blowing electronic music. Sure, there's been lots and lots of great releases out, but for me the point to get me saying “Hey, that's fucking amazing” hadn't been reached by now. The COMADUSTER single 'Winter Eyes' hinted at it already and I presumed that if the album would be just half as good, we'd be fixed a killer album. Let's start at the top of it with 'ma', a seriously engaging piece of electronic music. It's understandably hard to recognize here. There's actually Dubstep in there, deconstructed and reassembled on a molecular level which brings me to the question why nobody else has tried this angle before. Resonating static is fading into the ether within the first seconds of 'The Send-Off' until a streamlined beat almost knocks you unconscious, that is, if you're playing it loud enough. Little advice: Don't try!! To explain the erratic shifts would be equal to explaining the fabric of tesseract. It's probably enough to mention that a large bunch of artists would be making three songs out of what happens within these 6 minutes.

A spherical riff leads into the album's title track, which seamlessly fuses ecstatic synth explosions, fractured melodies and mellow vocals. At some points it almost seems to fall apart and structures dissolve to come back together just the same. All throughout these ups and downs, Cardinal succeeds greatly in keeping an almost impossibly cohesion to the track. 'Unfound' is a stripped-back piece of instrumental, processed piano play that does a fine job in playing with the spaces between the notes. Consider this a moment of rest because the following 'Walls' is nothing like it. First, it's going to run you over with a harsh barrage of synthetic destruction that leave not the slightest clue that would lead you into thinking this could turn-out a real poppy affair with one of the most endearing ambient sections so far. 'Chasms' bears an omnipresent sense of danger all throughout its ever-morphing sine waves that have everything from clicks'n'cuts to ambient and emotive piano movements melded to a stirring cocktail for you. 'Futureproof Design' starts out as an eclectic collage of sounds eventually forward a relatively straightforward pattern that keeps just the right balance not to flood your mind with too many details at a time.

Apart from that, the melody department does its best to immerse you completely within its all-encompassing aura. Clocking in at 11 minutes 'Nightsail' gains momentum pretty fast and maintains it all the way until the order gives way to complete chaos that fades into merciful quiet eventually. 'Hollow Worlds' gets a worthy closing with the already known 'Connecting The Seams'; featured on the 'Accretion' compilation. It never ever erupts while wrapping its melodious fluidity around your heart. IF you were waiting for an electronic album to call album of the year, you should consider this one. It tops everything with a flawless production and not a single track that feels like filler material. Hopefully, the next record won't be taking too long.
