EP Review

Listening to a record by British duo AUTECHRE always has been somewhat like climbing the next most difficult and highest mountain you can possibly find and afterwards feeling like a train just ran you over. They're responsible for many of the “WTF” moments I had listening to electronic music with them being at least ten steps ahead of everyone regarding a unique and unique and unpredictable sound design. 'L-Event' is the follow-up EP to the duo's double album 'Exai', released earlier this year. Clocking in at just about 26 minutes it is less than usual but more than you can handle. Starting with 'tac Lacora' is a demonstration of how to fuck someone’s mind properly with squelching bass oscillations battling with metallic sequencer assaults and rioting bass drums. It personally made me feel like being ticked in a flipper and I'm the ball that has to succumb to the powers that be. 'M39 Diffain' being the next strong track demonstrates what happens if you apply physical decay onto electronic music. Surrounded by aimlessly wandering ghost lights of cavernous atmospheres embracing a massive fundament of beats that don't seem to follow any direction at all, you start to notice subtle but distinctively growing decay.

The disappearing parts of the structure regroup while falling and create something entirely new on the way down before hitting a carpet of brooding static laid out deep down below. Third track 'Osla for n' falls behind the previous two offerings by far. Considerably weaker in design and with too little alteration it is getting quite annoying after few minutes. That sound which is like scraping crap off your walls could be used fairly well for acoustic torturing. The closing 'newbound' fortunately makes up for that little flaw again in adapting and manipulating the sound of a drop of water hitting virtual grounds and such creating distorted echoes to serve as a strange form of beat. The duo embraces the melodic concept again on this one, making it quite accessible if you go by AUTECHRE standards. ‘L-Event’ will serve as a new subject for tech-nerds and very open minded music lovers for months and months to come, digging through all the layers and figuring what the hell this or that sound was before it ran through mysterious pathways and came out something different.
