Album Review

Before I review this Self-released album, I will keep my fingers crossed for Singer Kieran McArdle to get well soon, Kieran also called Twerp had a bad Accident at work and broke some bones including his Pelvis and a few ribs, that said on to the music…

At the first Listening I was expecting absolutely nothing as this is the debut release of this Motley Crew of Irish lads and a lady, what I got while listening was homemade and heartfelt old school Rock`n`Roll sounding like a mixture of AC/DC and sometimes a little bit of THIN LIZZY (which isn`t bad at all), almost all the time BIG GUNS are marching straight forward shooting mid tempo songs from the hip like there`s no tomorrow. The opener ‘Red Eyed & Rolling’ is a good example for the direction this record will take you, the song sounds like AC/DC on a Southern Rock trip, all the time managing to not lose the Blues influence of before mentioned Australian band.

Song number two, the title track ‘Devil`s Highway’, sounds like those guys from Australia even more, bridging the gap between the YOUNG BROTHERS and AIRBOURNE sounding a bit more fresh and modern on the edges. More of the same on the third track called ‘A Song for a Friend’, though not already boring the band`s musical standpoint should be very clear to the listener by now. ‘Remember me’, the fourth track on ‘Down but not out’, is the very first song that doesn’t sound like Australia’s finest, which is a good thing for a fresh band, the song rocks hard, goes straight forward and makes you want to grab a beer.

‘Kiss & Tell’ is the ‘All night long’ of BIG GUNS, the song is about a badass lady toying with a unknowing guy`s heart, sounds hard but don’t we all know that kind of girl or guy? Song number six is a solid NEIL YOUNG cover version of ‘Rocking in the Free World’ that doesn`t inspire to lose many words about it. ‘Fall from Grace’ is solid mid tempo Rock`n`Roll without any bad surprises, or surprises at all. The last track ‘Always & Forever’ is a nice, sad instrumental that rounds up a good but not great album that leaves you unsatisfied but with high hopes for the band`s future.
