Album Review

ASHES OF ARES is what happens when great bands disband and single musicians can`t seem to overcome their hunger and passion for more. More music, more crowds, more gigs just more of everything that defined their last years in former bands. ASHES OF ARES have arisen from the ashes you could say. Matt Barlow, former singer of ICED EARTH from 1995 until the mid of 2003 and from 2008 until the year 2011. Guitarist Freddie Vidales too was a member of ICED EARTH, although with ICED EARTH he was a bassist. Drummer Van Williams is well known for being the drummer for NEVERMORE. So these guys formed a new kickass power metal band and named it ASHES OF ARES. There is not much to know about this band, not much that happened since their formation aside from this very debut album I am listening to right now.

What can I say? I am indeed a total Matt Barlow fan boy I love every record he`s on and he is the sole reason why ICED EARTH became my favourite metal band ever. Nothing has changed; I really like this record very much because it sounds very much like ICED EARTH. The only major difference is that Jon Schaffer didn`t write any lyrics on this one and you can actually hear it. Barlow has a completely different approach on writing lyrics and melody, okay there are mutuality’s but a real fan will know what I mean. The overall sound is very straight forward and very powerful, the vocals complete the good impression. If you are searching for a new favourite song just listen to ‘The Answer’ it`s friggin` excellent. Once again I can say without doubt that Matthew Barlow is one of the best heavy metal vocalists on this sweet planet.
