Album Review

BLUES PILLS are an American/ French/ Swedish Hard Rock band, formed in 2011. Following up on last year’s highly acclaimed EP ‘Devil’s Man’, the band now releases a Live EP which features four rare tracks and also illustrates live capabilities of the quartet around charismatic front woman Elin Larsson. ‘Live At Rockpalast’ was recorded during the band’s performance at Crossroads Festival in Bonn. ‘In The Beginning’ marks an instrumental start, with dreamy and demanding guitar work. Already, the band effuses a very retro atmosphere and takes its listeners to a trip back to the 70s and 80s.

‘Black Smoke’ varies between calmer, emotional parts and straight-forward, rock ‘n’ roll-like elements. Elin Larsson’s strong and powerful vocals also work very well live. They are especially dominant and energetic during the calmer beginning of ‘Little Sun’, which then veers towards a more playful and still rocking title. In ‘Mind Exit’, the guitar work is very prominent and also marks for the band’s good songwriting abilities. All in all, ‘Live At Rockpalast’ proves a nice output, which is highly recommended for any fan of psychedelic-influenced and technically skilled Hard Rock. It furthermore gives a possible outlook on what is still to be expected from this young and promising band.
