Album Review

Dave Scrag, also known from SOUL IN ISOLATION, is here with ‘Dark Waters’ under his A PALE MOON project. It’s an album that leaves me with mixed feelings; his vocal is Bowie-esque but weak and doesn’t really do much to evoke the melancholy emotions, the melodies are pinched by old-school-ish twinkling spacy distortions, both spoil even the better songs e.g. ‘Mistaken’, ‘The Time Traveller’. There’s this retro and minimalistic feeling that doesn’t work to give it more. The best song is easily ‘Mesmerised’ which shakes off the vocal, the silly tricks and has a bit of a better atmosphere. It can be pleasant in places but mostly it just misses to hit the target, that is the engagement and fondness, it just leaves me with near-total indifference.
