Album Review

DEATHSTARS are a Swedish Industrial/ Gothic Metal band, founded in 2000. The band supported acts such as KORN and RAMMSTEIN and is also known for their distinct, horror and gothic-influenced visual appearance. So far, the band has released four studio records, the latest one being entitled ‘The Perfect Cult’, which follows up on ‘Night Electric Night’ (2009).

On ‘The Perfect Cult’, DEATHSTARS continue their own, particular mélange of electronic, industrial elements alongside with grooving and heavy riffs. The style does not depart much from its predecessors, but rather offers a continuation and partial refinement. After the mid-tempo opener ‘Explode’, ‘Fire Galore’ continues in a more forceful manner, with a distinct and somewhat catchy Keyboard line alongside Whiplasher’s charismatic, deep vocals. Whereas ‘All The Devil’s Toys’ sounds particularly electronically-influenced and dominated by rather eroticizing vocals, ‘Ghost Reviver’ is more energetic and straight-forward. The title track appears rather march-like and archaic, while ‘Asphalt Wings’ also includes symphonic, string-played phrases.

‘Bodies’ is a calmer, very dark and haunting song, which is also driven by harsher, striking synthesizer effects. The atmosphere of this song is very peculiar and moody, which makes it probably stick out as a rather unusual title on the album. ‘Track, Crush & Prevail’ sounds somehow epic, and ‘Noise Cut’s concludes the album in a characteristic, unsurprising way. All in all, ‘The Perfect Cult’ is a conclusive album, with a playing time of roughly an hour. The production is solid, although it partly sounds too synthetic, at least for my taste. Moreover, the songs appear rather repetitive and monotonous in their structures, which, together with the dominant electronic elements is not really my cup of tea. However, fans of Industrial, Gothic-influenced Metal may very well check this album out and make up their own minds about it.
