Album Review

Unfortunately or not, but through the years BLUTENGEL overcame not just its rivals, but also took over all of thousands other Chris Pohl’s projects, including TERMINAL CHOICE. Comparing to the vampire-project all the other things turned out to be just fun. After the countless changes In the line-up now there are just the mastermind and one of the most famous vampires of our days Chris Pohl and Ulrike Goldmann who joined the band in 2005. Since 1998, when the band was formed, the image of vampires has been changing a lot. It was the time when classical examples of Stocker’s and Rice’s vampires with their Victorian style became too boring. In the 2000s brutal modern style with touch of beloved traditions took over, and ‘Blade’ became a hero of the night. Then the warriors of ‘Underworld’ and ‘Nochnoj Dozor’ (Night Watch / Wächter der Nacht) conquered the modern world and pushed vampires-aristocrats even more underground. Now in the epoch of ‘True Blood’ and ‘Twilight’ when vampires completely assimilated in our world they start to remember the better Victorian times.

Musically and lyrically those processes are reflected in the BLUTENGEL activity, as the band could be considered the voice of empire of the Night. ‘Black Symphonies’ is a logical step for the band, as well as for the rest of the gothic scene. After the festival “Gothic meets Klassik” which first found place back in 2012, the recording of gothic hits with classical arrangements was a question of time. And so Chris Pohl found a way to combine the songs of children of the night with symphonic orchestra. These two components go naturally together as well as the recitative by Pohl is nicely accompanied by Goldmann’s singing. The best thing about this album is to mention that finally modern music steps out of the self-made studios and laptops. The tendency to use more real instruments and even invite the whole orchestra brings hope that the future of this scene is bright and beautiful. The next step would be to invite real singers. But no rush, we just cross the fingers and wait. Moreover even today it is easy to imagine old kind Lestat enjoying ‘Black Symphonies’.
