Album Review

While their success is massive in UK, this band never really managed to break through abroad. Often compared to COLDPLAY with their first albums (while their debut album was actually in 1997... two years before COLDPLAY) it took them a bit of time to reinvent themselves to avoid this. Despite that, the two bands are quite good friends, to the point where COLDPLAY covered an EMBRACE song: ‘Gravity’. If there's still a link between the two bands, a certain sense of melody and stadium anthems, this new album reveals some clear NEW ORDER influences, with bass-lines in the pure “Hookie” style, analogic synth pads. ‘In The End’ being the most obvious example of it. U2's The Edge is certainly another influence with those guitars full of delays and reverb, but I won't complain.

The nine songs of this album form a collection of pure potential hits that will certainly see the all Glastonbury or Reading crowds jump like mad. (‘Refugees’, ‘Follow You Home’). Of course there are some slower songs, like the superb ‘I Run’, the most U2-esque song, both with guitars and vocals. The collector edition comes with a DVD that sees the band performing the complete album live in studio. A captivating set that gives the all dimension to the songs. To sum it up... if you're into bands like U2 and SIMPLE MINDS (their “heroic rock” era of course), NEW ORDER, JAMES, THE VERVE and of course, COLDPLAY, this album may well be for you.
