Album Review

1991 saw founding of Norwegian ENSLAVED, an extreme metal band that kept Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson at the core but changed around them over the time as their name solidified on the Metal scene. ‘In Times’ is their thirteenth album. It’s a mixture of their roots in black metal and love for progressive rock, which means you can expect a mixture of raw growls with clean vocals through an atmospheric soundscape made harder by blast beats and polarising tempos. Its effect on the songs is that they simultaneously compress and open; both of their favoured genres feel like they’re in a dialogue with each other. As a listening experience it’s like a ride which harries you on to land you in reflective moments. An end result, not as brutal offering but a dark psychedelia that you can really enjoy.
