Album Review

CATHERINE DUC is an Australian composer with Vietnamese roots. Probably exactly the mixed blood calls for worldwide adventures, which are possible to hear in her music. On the same album you can hear oriental influences, pure melodies, born on the ocean shore, as well as Celtic tunes. Which makes ‘Voyager’ a travel around the world in forty minutes. This a very soft and cosy album, great for relaxation. However neither the mantras nor the combination of melodies from different edges of the world make this album any special. It could happen that you have this record in a particular moment in time, when you're looking for another ambient album – in this situation you are lucky to have ‘Voyager’.

But there is either too much of everything so it's easy to get tired of switching between ages and east and west, or it is simply boring. If you're looking for something what will shake your mind and heart, what will inspire or encourage you – probably you'd better find some old good classics by DEAD CAN DANCE or CONJURE ONE. CATHERINE DUC surely has a great talent, and she did a great job in ten years with this album, however you would not miss this record, even if (or exactly because) it was nominated for Grammy as the “Best New Age“ album.
