Album Review

APOPTYGMA BERZERK has always been a significant pioneer in the electronic scene. They were one of the first artists to suggest something called "future pop". Since then, they have always been at the top, even during the inactive periods. Now they are the first ones to exit the popularity contest. And this is highly possible that many and many will follow this idea. We are living in the future based on the world described in the past: in ‘Metropolis’, in Bradbury's books and KRAFTWERK's albums. In this sense, Stephan Groth might be one of the few persona who is down to Earth, and who feels our time the best. ‘Exit Popularity Contest’ was inspired by Lars von Trier, David Lynch, David Cronenberg and many others. It tells a story of someone, creating his own reality, where he is accepted for what he is. In Groth's case - for his music.

Diving into APOP world, you should keep in mind that you could hardly find a bigger KRAFTWERK fan than Groth. So no wonder that musically the album is something between KRAFTWERK and Jean-Michel Jarre. Klaus Schulze and Giorgio Moroder among the others also got the special thanks. It is an instrumental album which is a very brave step out of the canvas of modern music industry. As well as the decision to release the album physically only. It's an excitement, not a challenge for the die-hard fans of the band, what is hard to say about the younger generation. But the greatest thing about it, it is not a pretentious conceptual work, but simply an honest story, told with analogue synths and drum machines, such as Arp Odyssey, Moog Source, Korg MS-20, Roland SH-2/SH-5/VP-330/, Juno-60/CR-8000, BOSS DR-55. The nerds might look into the booklet for more stuff. The idea behind ‘Exit Popularity Contest’ is not to surprise or challenge anybody. This is what one musician believes in: symplicity, analogue synths, honesty and a small life in an endless and beautiful universe.
