Introduction

Deviance is a very young and new band. They started in 2005, and their line-up was complete in 2006. The band members are all around 20 years old. I have seen them as the opening act of the Bastille Metal Fest in Schoonhoven. Even though they were the first band to play, people were talking about them until the end of the day. A very successful opener I might say.

Line-up

Danny van Leiden – Guitar
Edwin Vrieselaar – Guitar
Jelle Mak – Drums
Lillian de Jong – Vocals
Rik Jongerius – Bass guitar

Song review

01. Visions of Sorrow – 4:19

To hear these guttural vocals and then imagine it is a 20 year old girl, quiet hard. A great thing about her vocals is that you can actually hear what she is singing. The guitars bring melody to their music. The drums are steady and at times there are some nice rolling drums.

02. As Illusions Fade – 4:00
This song even has a little swing to it. In the middle of the song there is a break for air, a quiet part without vocals, only soft guitars. There is room for both instruments and vocals, each gets their time to shine. A dark sound but also easy to listen to, it will appeal to a broad metal audience I think. The mix might not be perfect yet but for a first demo it certainly isn’t bad at all.

03. Final Dawn – 4:10
This song contains some nice guitar solos. I find it to be the least strong song of the album. But still great work for this young band on their first demo.

Conclusion

A great start. Can’t wait to see how far they will make it. If they keep up the good work they might go a long way.
