Title: Dawn of the New Athens
Band: Aesma Daeva
Genre: Symphonic metal
Release date: March 2007
Label: Self financed

Introduction

Aesma Daeva is a (how they call it) symphonic metal band from Minneapolis, the United States. Aesma Daeva formed out of the early collaboration of Nick Copernicus (production) and John Prassas (guitars, composition) in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, circa 1998. They worked together on a remix of an original work, "Darkness", for COP International compilation disc Diva-X-Machina II. As their project began taking shape, a second new track "Stay," caught the eye of Adrian Hates (Diary Of Dreams) at Accession records Germany, who published their first full length album: "Here Lies One Whose Name Is Written In Water”. Aesma Daeva's new album, Dawn of the New Athens, was released in March 2007. This album marks a new era for Aesma Daeva in their quest for high quality, original material.

Song review

01. Tisza's Child - 06:36
The first track on the album is really symphonic and gothic. The vocals are very pure. The balance between the pure vocals and the instruments are also good. My first impression: This whole cd sounds like more!

02. The Bluish Shade - 05:14

The song starts very up tempo with guitar riffs and very fast drums. The female vocal sounds more different than the first track, but it's still the same vocaliste.

03. Artemis - 06:22
It looks like a folk intro, but this is more a ballad. This song is more slowly than the songs before.

04. Hymn to the Sun - 04:21

It's time for an up-tempo song after the ballad. This is more different than the songs before. The drums are very fast and the balance between vocals and instruments is in a good balance

05. D'Oreste - 03:25
The shortest track on this album starts very impressive. The vocals are very pure.
The balances between slow and fast parts are great.

06. The Camp of Souls - 05:36

A symphonic slow song, the intro of this track is in the first way not very impressive but a little bit standard. Something impressive can you hear after a couple of minutes, it's a funny folk part what makes it different. You have to listen this track more than once.

07. Ancient Verses - 04:32

The instrumental fast intro makes this song more folk than symphonic.
It's different than the rest of the tracks. Some synthesizer parts are not an addition, but the rest of it is okay.

08. Since the Machine - 06:49

An up-tempo song again, with of course a lot of impressive guitar riffs. The symphonic synthesizer parts are very strong, in combination with the male backing vocals.

09. The Loon - 06:32

The last song is also a slowly one. The mix between guitar and bass guitar is very funny in this track.

Conclusion

This cd is really great in way of sound, mix, instruments and vocals. The vocals are a little bit the same as Tara Turunen, it sounds pure and beautiful. The drums, bass guitar and guitars sounds very good. The synthesizer parts and samples make the cd more complete. Most of the tracks are very impressive and different than the rest of the tracks on the cd. I like the difference between slow ballads and fast up-tempo tracks. You have to listen this cd, it's worth that!
