Album Review

For 15 years he was the distinct voice and one of the founding members of SUEDE, considered one of the pioneering bands in the Britpop genre. After Suede disbanded in 2003, he fronted THE TEARS, who are currently on indefinite hiatus. In March 2007, BRETT ANDERSON released his first self-titled solo-album sound-wise much more introverted than the material he put out with SUEDE. Barely 1 ½ years have passed since then and now it’s time for ‘Wilderness’…

It’s hard to believe this album actually was recorded this year’s summer as melancholy is a constant companion in the music of ‘Wilderness’ which was recorded with a most minimal line-up. You can hear Anderson counting to 4 and then he takes us to ‘A different Place’ his voice only carried by cello, piano and acoustic guitar he’s indulging in thoughts about a woman he’s giving a rose from his garden “as the petals blow away and look like confetti on her beautiful face”. Didn’t I try to love her? Didn’t I paint pictures of her? Didn’t I try to change? I shouldn’t have bothered. The elation makes way for discontent, disappointment. No matter how much you’ve tried to be there for her, it was never enough and probably never will be; a ballad full of sad colours, painted by piano and cello as well as Brett’s exceptional voice. Accentuated by medieval guitar sounds, Brett demonstrates what it can be like when the love for each other has dried up and “Mouths that once exchanged kisses in the rain are full of hate now” when nothing is left anymore “love is on its way down now, such a lonely sound…” Also ‘Chinese Whispers’ is drenched in minor chords and even though lines like ‘The ivy’s taken over where you planted rosemary’ indicate that the love she planted in his heart has withered, there still seems to be an attraction “I don’t need you, But I want you.
I don’t want you, but I need you.”

‘Blessed’ on the other hand is a clear cut love declaration to a very special person and he conveys those feelings without getting cheesy (in my opinion) dressed up in beautiful words “You smile and I’m blessed, you laugh and I’m possessed.” Mantras are used in Eastern spiritual traditions to divert the mind from basic instinctual desires or material inclinations, by focusing the mind on a spiritual idea. Only as a short introduction to the upcoming ‘Funeral Mantra’ which, as you might have guessed already’, diverts a little from the other pieces. You can hear percussions and the conjuring repetitive chant in the background to the dark sounds of strings and it’s like Brett wants to commence a reincarnation “We’ll live again” or it’s just the discovery that it can’t rain all time. “When the pigs fly and when the planets tie, that’s when I come back to you.” clear words struck in this piano piece, bearing witness to negative experience made and lessons learned from it, while you can’t help noticing that two lovers grew apart from each other. “Think I call her number just one time, if she calls back I don’t care and she won’t mind.” The sad mood of this number descends on your soul like a dark shadow and Brett’s moving words only add to the sing not letting you go for a long time. Sad but true we’re already reached the end of ‘Wilderness’ with ‘P. Marius’, another utterly fragile ballad that, even though it sounds like a love declaration, bears unmistakable dark tones and now I’m not so sure anymore “Take the bridge over the serpentine and I see you once again…”

With most minimal means, BRETT ANDERSON managed too create an incredibly touching album that affects you deeply and more than one time you’re sitting there with a lump in your throat. A wonderful album for the dark hours in autumn that could have been much longer for me, but this shouldn’t cut down the overall quality of this release
