Album Review

In May 2008, the young band around front woman and singer Ria attracted some attention with the ‘Unter dem Eis’ EP and in Summer of the same year they played a few concerts as support for ICH+ICH. The single ‘Eisblumen’ released in January jumped up to #3 of the German Singles Chart. The album which carries the same title as the EP will be released this Friday.

The most prominent track on the album right now surely is ‘Eisblumen’ with its special video clip and I heard that song several times on TV in some commercial teasers as well. The cover of the SUBWAY TO SALLY track starts as a fragile piano ballad with the clear that can turn in a few moments from utterly brittle to extremely powerful. Later on a few softer drums are added and for the next chorus her voice melts with the guitars and strings for a stunning performance. ‘Leben ist schön’ is more electronic in its essence and my loved piano is featured again as well. Still it has a little more pace than ‘Eisblumen’ had and once again I fell in love with the voice. Just can’t help it! ‘Land in Sicht’ can be seen as the exact counterpart to the aforementioned track, less electronics but more straight rock and a couple of heavier riffs now and then. The lyrics transport a will to fight, that you can survive almost anything with someone not letting go of you no matter what happens along the way. It’s one of the most important things in life to have someone and sooner or later everyone will find such a special person.

‘Überleben’ is one track that got to me at first listen. The longing and also sadness contained in these words is almost palpable; the knowing someone you loved just left your life without any word and won’t come back anymore. The arrangement’s like thin glass so you’re afraid to make just the slightest noise so it won’t shatter. But in the second incarnation of the chorus guitars and drums emerge alongside orchestral strings. “I will survive you but I won’t be the same anymore.” Another foray through more rocking realms comes with ‘Sieben Mal’ with driving and vivid drums before we come to the final show named ‘Louise’ which is in my opinion the prime discipline of EISBLUME which would be ballads or balladry pieces; in this case it’s a ballad as intimate as possible spiced with electronics culminating up to an orchestral climax of choirs and strings and piano. Perfect for me!

Call this stuff cheesy if you want but for me this band is, amongst a myriad of flat offshoots of the Indie Rock and Gothic genre, an absolute positive surprise. Sound production and most important: Not one of those airy voices. Don’t judge this band by what you’ve read or heard from your friends. Form your own opinion by listening to the album to the album. They deserve it.
