Album Review

THE BAKERTON GROUP, the psychedelic instrumental jazz-laden alter ego of CLUTCH (all four original CLUTCH members make up THE BAKERTON GROUP), will release its new album, ‘El Rojo’, a combination of tunes that showcases the mellower sides and ways of the music. This self-titled debut surprised a lot of people for not only the whole world by its crafted musicianship and funked out sensibilities, but how well played out it comes to be in the end. The instruments efforts typically capture the certain segments of the diehard rock community but what THE BAKERTON GROUP makes of it is impossible to control. The involuntary bouts of toe-tapping, head-bobbing and rump shaking are just the start it’s an on-going process of music that has a repeating pattern to it.

This time the boys have enlisted the services of OPETH keyboard wiz Per Wiberg who drenches the compositions in molten organ lava, while the appearance of some equally white-hot saxophone playing really brings out the sleazy funk and sultry swing. Equal parts electric Miles Davis and Allman Brothers instrumental acid trips, ‘El Rojo’ exemplify the real muscle behind so many great Clutch albums. Some tunes that stick out the most includes ‘Work'em’, ‘Last Orbit’, and ‘Life on Liars’, each one having that creative rock and roll smooth jazz appeal that keeps your mind into the beat and tone of the music. It uplifts the music making it more enjoyable and fun to listen in on, but at times does tend to carry off repeating that same old sound over and over again but you get use to it after a while. THE BAKERTON GROUP has accomplished themselves creatively well this time around and he smoke will rise when the play button is pushed.
