Single Review

It’s quite a surprise isn’t it? First, out of the blue, there’s’ an announcement of a new DIARY OF DREAMS single with ‘King of Nowhere’ which is one of my favourites on the recent album by the way, and then there’ll be a new video clip as well. That’s something we’ll talk about later though because there’s more, there’s always more. The tracklist encompasses several versions of the title track. The album version and its undying piano melody makes the start, telling of the ‘King of Nowhere’, a person living detached from the world, someone who doesn’t belong. With the years passing, the wish to be more than a lonely eremite becomes stronger and burdens his soul "It’s just one step to take".

The ‘Desert Mix’ of the track triggers off a sand storm with noisy patterns slowly emerging out of it to culminate in a much more forceful rhythm than the original has, intermingling with playful sound gimmicks. The ‘Club Mix’ is, well it’s a club mix with a humming rhythm section which still leaves enough space for the melodic elements. While we’re at it, the melodic elements are the focal point of the ‘Phonecall from Nowhere Mix’. The identifying melody of the song has been put through electronic alienation and keeps re-appearing throughout the song as backdrop besides clean piano lines and soft veils of melancholic atmospherics. Ultimately, they’re all meant to highlight the voice of Adrian Hates which is as clean and clear as it can get here. The ‘Lonely Mix’ of the last album’s closer ‘Kingdom of Greed’ simply is the album version without any kind of drums, only amplifying the balladry character the song already has.

Last but not least there’s a video clip of the song with live footage from a concert in Russia in best quality, and the mysterious new video clip I’m sure you all want to know more about. But for now you will have to stick with the little allusion that it’s going to be different and worth watching, so be sure to check out the band’s Myspace tomorrow for the premier. The clip will go live at 10 AM. Now to the last part, the conclusion. The new single shows what you can make of a single song. Each version highlights different aspects and the whole package is a must-have for fans.
