Album Review

After their more or less successful first album ‘Hail the Big Boy’, their mastermind retreated to the US but now he and his band are back with the new CD ‘Ponygirl’. It proves to be straighter, more edgy and also a little happier than the last one. But all the people who were fans of the debut will surely recognize BIG BOY's handwriting in ‘Ponygirl’.

Some people might think that ‘Ponygirl’ is one of those CDs that won't stand out of all the masses of releases in today's Goth and industrial scene like the first one did in some way. But this time it’s more BIG BOY than before. It has more rock elements to offer and is more diversified. But before I continue with all the good stuff, I have to say that ‘Ponygirl’ is definitely not the greatest CD I’ve ever heard, even though BIG BOY have improved their skills. But despite all the improvement, the songs still sound like all those average industrial metal songs out there. BIG BOY tries to do everything better and without any flaws in it. Some songs you should listen to are ‘Love is almost perfect’, ‘Heroin Heroin’ (which is probably about his past) and the album opener.

Songs that don't really fit the album are the slow ‘Mermaid’ (which could have been written by a band like TOKIO HOTEL as well), ‘Terror Era’, the remix of ‘Love is almost perfect’, having a more electronic sound that probably is supposed to make it to a more club compatible song, and the ballad ‘You said’ with a rough voice that really doesn't fit to the mood of the song. With ‘Ships’, BIG BOY show that they’re also capable of using some nice guitar riffs which relaxes this whole “trying to make everything perfect” mood of the album. At the end of the album, BIG BOY comes up with the only German song ‘Diese Welt’ which sounds a little like a tribute to RAMMSTEIN.

Upon listening to the album, you can hear that BIG BOY want to separate themselves from other bands of the industrial metal genre, but the album reaches the exact opposite. The album is not outstanding and when people who don't know BIG BOY yet listen to the CD, they’ll probably think that it is a nice, straight album but they apparently won’t keep it in mind for a long time.
