Album Review

Slovakian duo DISHARMONY truly is no dark horse in the electronic music theatre, having released several albums already. Last year, they’ve made their debut on their new American label home with the collection ‘Cloned - Other Side of Evolution’ showcasing their skills as remixers. Ever since, the acquired community of admirers is waiting for all new material which has finally arrived with ‘Evolution’.

The opener ‘Revolution’ goes with the tradition of constructing an epic track the classic way that is, adding an evolutional algorithm giving it additional layers at a given time when the other one’s been introduced properly. Kicking off with pithy bass drones and a cavernous string support, the duo is utilizing hard, old-school industrial rhythms with their trademark nightmarish vocal delivery in the further course, contrasting the beauty they are capable of creating with their melodies. ‘Legend’ initially strongly emphasizes on atmospheres until the furious screams tear apart the fluid sonic picture and sow a seed of destruction and violence sprouting in the stabbing, trembling structure the song’s developing while insanely growing in complexity. Instrumental ‘Dandora’ floods the mind with finest ambient and classical beauty while beats, regardless of their presence, only play a minor role in its universe.

The duo’s always had a penchant for classical elements and a knack for cunningly embedding them into their sound. ‘Endofends’ is a prime example of how that can sound like when some time into the track a storm is looming followed up by majestic voices of a choir reverberating through the dead of night. The whole thing’s reaching its peak with the distorted vocals and a swelling orchestral string section, delivering a sinister symphony framed by lamenting souls and quite simple drum work. ‘Evolution’ marks the end of the journey. It’s a track you could already hear on the duo’s Myspace profile in an unfinished version. Who knew it would take on such dimensions. The bare drum patterns in the beginnings are morphing constantly over the song’s duration, changing their time signature and pace multiple times. The mood and ambience remains graceful at all times being made of thick layering and having an amazing, all-pervasive character.

The album definitely marks an ‘Evolution’ in the sound of DISHARMONY towards an even more elaborate, matured overall sound. To this day, it’s completely beyond me why a group with such capabilities carves out an existence in the shadows of Dark Electro projects whose only aim is to serve the dance floors. Well, people just don’t seem to get sick of the same repetitive 4/4 stuff, even after all those years. However, those who are will find an astonishing variety and detail on this album that simply stands-out. It’s music for ambitious listeners and highly recommended.
