Album Review

DICEPEOPLE is a one-man project created by Matt Brock, who has been writing and producing music for many years and had cooperated with a couple of industrial bands based in London. His songs present an intricate combination of synthesized electronic sounds with slight sonic inclusions from various musical styles. Matt also plays keyboard in a post-rock band however he decided to concentrate on DICEPEOPLE and recorded the first album entitled ‘Time to Play’. As the project intends to affect people intellectually, emotionally and mentally it’s rather interesting to find out whether the aim was achieved.

The CD containing 9 complete compositions strikes one’s imagination with a variety of different sounds creating a peculiar and complicated atmosphere in which it’s easy to get lost. If the first three tracks are not so difficult for listening and understanding and they are apprehended as a quite clear succession but unfortunately it can’t be said about the other songs. The sounds sometimes not strictly connected to each other appear and fade in an endless stream overburdening your consciousness and the music itself is getting rather oppressive and boring. The only track that can be marked out for its more or less distinct rhythm and dynamism is ‘The Fear’. Finally, there appears a song which structure can be called clear-cut and then ‘The World I See’, one more interesting composition attracted my attention with its impressive sonic mixture.

Well, ‘Time to Play’ is a thought-provoking album indeed with a lot of meaningful yet hidden aspects but only lovers of such music will be able to appreciate at the true value of the work.
