German five-piece DECEMBER PEALS plays brisk and cheerful punk rock, still not too pretentious but it’s not a dire necessity for the style. The band managed to release a full-length album, a great number of demos and three EPs, one of which entitled ‘If You Wanna Be Loud’ turned out to be quite successful and the formation could attract the attention of European music scene. The quintet’s new work ‘People Have Demons’ includes 13 tracks which “were sent to set the new benchmark” and it really seems to be true after cursory listening to the material: notching guitars, unrestrained drums and vigorous vocals together produce a strong impression on a listener.
The first track ‘Bad Company’ already attacks your ears with a dreadful energy and the music rushes towards you getting more powerful and expressive as the album proceeds. But actually the more I listened to the CD, the more I realized that the sonic stream passed by me. Yes, the quality of the record is very good and all the elements are combined in an excellent way, but still there’s a feeling that something significant is omitted. The songs don’t strike with their variety and despite several interesting melodic parts the album suffers from somewhat monotony. Gradually it plunged me into a peaceful drowse and it was getting much harder to concentrate on the compositions, yet there are tracks deserved to be marked out.
Vivacious ‘The Devil You Know’ pleases with its catchy chorus while the acoustic song ‘Capitol Cowboys’ is indeed the best one on the CD, so the things are not too bad yet unfortunately ‘People Have Demons’ is full of flat run-of-the-mill tracks that can spoil the whole impression. Nevertheless the album may interest the fans of the band and the style in general and of course all those who want to listen to simple light and powerful music.
