Album Review

CARSTEN KLATTE is best known for his eclectic guitar works for bands like PROJECT PITCHFORK, CASSANDRA COMPLEX, or more recently as live member of the PETER HEPPNER band. He however is far more than just a guest musician; moreover an artist in his own right who put out under the moniker of LA CASA DEL CID some exciting music stuff. As far as I know this eponymous CD release is his first CD release under his own name.

And that one begins with the song 'Put Simply', starting through right away with vivid drums and string arrangements that give it a bit of a folk feeling somehow, while Carsten with his memorable voice tells its story. 'Happy Few' is getting a bit more melancholic, scuffles in slow-motion through the speakers and is proof that you don't need a ton of instruments to bring to life good mood. 'Rip All Ties' will send your mind to the countryside of America into a bam where a fest is going down and people are dancing to a tapping feet rhythm. At least that's where I find myself when listening to that one. The only thing that doesn't fit into that cosy little picture is the grave undercurrent, lying between the melodies and words of Carsten. Even though 'Godlike' features a somewhat sub cooled sound, it not at all feels like that. It rather makes you feel that there's virtually nothing you can't do and that a little faith can move mountains. Just my two cents on the track!

'Trouble shooting' is a track that for most of its duration goes pretty well without drums, stripped down to the essential guitars and vocals. In my eyes the little drum crescendo close to the end, the track is moving towards wouldn't have been necessary, but it doesn't particularly destroy the mood either. Just doesn't feel right for me, that's all. 'Who can see' brings the album to a quiet end, and it's an end that could hardly be more beautiful in its shimmering melancholy fading sunlight usually brings. Thoughts about life in general, your own or the life of another person fill up your mind. It's no overstatement if I say this is the most beautiful track on an album full of surprises, of candid storytelling and wonderful musical company.
