BLOCKFLÖTE DES TODES (Recorder of Death) is the name German musician Matthias Schrei has chosen for his musical endeavors. The man who plays many instruments, including the recorder of course, now is close to releasing his album 'Wenn Blicke flöten könnten' (If looks could whistle) or something like that. That album opens with 'Mädchenhaar', a tale about a guy who's having a girl's hair allergy and thus lives a life devoid of all the pleasures all the other people enjoy. Musically, it is orchestrated with lofty drums, airy guitar and a hint of piano. 'Mein Mitbewohner' continues with someone wondering why his flat mate hasn't left his room in quite some time and lists many possible causes, the most surprising one being him having discovered the pleasures of internet porn. All this wrapped in calm acoustic streams of music. 'Du Bist So Schön Wie Ein Flughafen' (You are as beautiful as an airport) takes the adverse route in delivering a brutal rock mayhem, catching you a little bit off guard.

Next one 'Jung und Schön' sees our guy thinking out loud about the advantages of being a young and beautiful girl in Berlin. You could have a party at any club without any money. Suppose you could get that in many other cities as well. The funky disco beat, underlining most of the track is the perfect choice of instrumentation. A low-key mood takes hold on 'Alles Wird Teurer' and while listening to that track, you're instinctively asking yourself why nobody else had the idea of fair trade coke already. So you don't get the wrong impression, the whole thing spews sarcasm and irony and is not to be taken literally by any means. You want to know how to get on the couch the fastest to indulge in your TV obsessions? Do it as the guy in 'Zu Laut' and be honest to your girlfriend and it will happen faster than you think. Another thing that can't happen too soon, at least for the guy in 'Volkshochschulkurs', is a successful suicide. He just doesn't seem to have the luck and decides to get himself some help.

Kind of a bizarre topic, accompanied by a country-esque backdrop with tapping rhythm to dance along! The album holds quite a lot of odd, but sometimes very familiar little stories and is an entertaining disc that can make dark days a little brighter; even if the background to some of them is more serious than it appears on first listen. Just read between the lines.
