Album Review

Already formed in 1978, EXCITER are one of the first Speed Metal bands and have also had a certain impact on Thrash Metal. Their debut record, ‘Heavy Metal Maniac’ has been put out in 1983 and since then, ten more albums as well as lots of line-up changes have followed. The band got known in Europe by touring with ACCEPT.

If a cult band continues to release albums, this tends to be a double-edged sword. At times, it would have been better to stop at a certain point. In the case of EXCITER, the new record carries lots of trademarks from their traditional style, but also newer and darker elements have been added. The title track to ‘Death Machine’ opens up the album, already pointing out what the following minutes will sound like: Fast guitar riffs underlined with speedy drumming and harsh vocals, in a pretty old-school manner. The chorus of this song is also relatively catchy. Furthermore, the rather simple production really suits the unembellished and straight-forward music.

To sum up, all songs on ‘Death Machine’ are good, but without the certain brutality, roughness, character and innovation that made their early works famous and exceeding. Fans of EXCITER nevertheless should give this album a try, since especially the grooving ‘Razor in Your Back’ or the harsh ‘HellFire’ could work well on stage.
