Album Review

The music of Bret Autrey aka BLUE STAHLI has appeared from the Fox News (!) and “CSI:NY” to “The Tourist”, “Sucker Punch”, “Knight & Day”, “The Final Destination” and Victoria’s Secret’s commercials among many others, all of which I confess I haven’t watched. Therefore his music came much as a surprise to me. Bret Autrey’s music is influenced mainly by LINKIN PARK and TOOL. And at the end one can ask if this amalgamation actually works. The answer to that is hell yeah! He removed much of the typical angst of the LINKIN PARK and kept something from the structures of TOOL songs and he added Electro Rock and Industrial elements when he produced this, his first full length album. His lyrics maybe don’t have the heights of TOOL but they are by far superior not only to LINKIN PARK but to most of the American bands. Add to all that a sense of theatricality, (after all he has a background of fetish burlesque troops) and tremendous fun and you have pretty much the whole feeling of the album.

‘ULTRAnumb’ opens the album greatly and though the reference to LINKIN PARK’s ‘Numb’ is obvious, maybe the overall feeling of a feisty spirit is not! BLUE STAHLI most certainly doesn’t make music for just for teens. The second track, ‘Scrape’, has an anti-religious aspect in its lyrics and I have to admit that it is probably the weakest of the album only because I’ve made the “mistake” and downloaded for free the acoustic version of it from the official site which is just sublime. It is a version that it should have been included in the album, not to mention that I loved the alternative to the lyrics in this line - “I love the violence between your thighs” instead of “ inside your mind” of the album version. ‘Anti You’ will make you jump up and down with its combination of Industrial, Electro and Nu Metal elements but so will ‘Doubt’ and ‘Takedown’ even more so. BLUE STAHLI has the aura for live concerts. His music also has an aspect of introspection and melancholy combined with enraged orchestrations which offer almost explosive results. ‘Corner’, ‘Kill Me Every Time’ and ‘Throw Away’ serve as fine examples of this approach.

I think that BLUE STAHLI will provoke the kind of feelings that only great, diverse and controversial bands can do. You’ll end up either loving BLUE STAHLI or listening to them with guilty pleasure. It is impossible to let go unnoticed. Personally I’ve ended up loving this music...
