Album Review

Upon reading the promo material of DIE FUNKHAUSGRUPPE I was curious to check out how the band sounds. That wasn’t due to the fact the band consists of 12 members but mainly that they are a union of four other bands. After listening to them the only thing I can say is that they offer fun, tremendous fun, the whole thing is like a guilty pleasure! The minimal, micro, the synth-pop and punk pop elements and the 80’s aesthetics in their sound do blend excellently to produce this well meant and organised insanity. One should check out the official video of ‘Die Physiker’ to have a grasp of the latter point.

The CD opens with ‘Stadtflucht’, an almost Rock’n’Roll song mixed with minimal sounds, moves to ‘Die Physiker’ which is another party-time song, and to cut my long speech short the whole up-beat feeling continues like that throughout ‘Mono-Poly’. Some songs have a more compensative feeling like let’s say in ‘Die Zeit Steht Still’ but this synth-pop dominance prevents the songs to collapse into sorrowful anthems and thus they maintain something undeniably charming. Now, if you are stern, the kind that enjoys the coffee only during funeral wakes, don’t check them out. But the rest of us are going to have a great time!
