Album Review

Spooky instrumental is nothing new or groundbreaking, no matter how innovative the artists think they’re being. Truth be told the underground neoclassical, avant-garde industrial, and electronic scenes have been producing utterly fantastic and enthralling bands for around thirty years now. However for every genuinely interesting band / artist there are a dozen half-arsed attempts sabotaged by a fundamental lack of musicianship. So it is understandable that these types of release can be approached with an air of suspicion.

Thankfully ACORN FALLING displays a very well rounded musical skill that incorporates everything from Jazz and Classical to Post-punk and Noize into their work. At times this can be a strange juxtaposition of sounds, but it always works well. The end result is cinematic in scope but with an unpolished edge that helps it to keep that underground feel. Almost like it was written for an independent sci-fi / horror film. Songs like ‘Thermal Climb’, ‘Coherence Abnormal’ and ‘Sunrise’ experiment with a more ambient and paired-back approach which is in sharp contrast to the full on noize of ‘Reaching For The Stars’ and ‘Lullaby For Saplings’.

When the drums are added to the mix the almost tribal quality of them generates a post-punk undercurrent the flirts with martial industrial when combined with the electronics. But when the Cello and Saxophone are brought into play the avant-garde and Jazz elements to the song writing truly come into their own, taking the music to a whole other level.
