Blumfeld - 20 Years "L`Etat et Moi" (in original line-up)

On 22nd August 1994, BLUMFELD released the album ‘L`Etat et Moi’. The album was smoothing the way for a new generation of German speaking bands and musicians and inspired across all genre borders. Until now, it is said to be style-defining and is always present in all top-lists. With the world-wide release of the album, BLUMFELD were touring Europe and USA. 20 years later, Jochen Distelmeyer (vocals & guitar), Andre Rattay (drums) und Eike Bohlken (bass) got together for an exclusive jubilee tour.

German BLUMFELD were founded already in 1990 and took their name from Franz Kafka’s works. After successful six albums, the band split up in 2007, followed by a solo career of front man Jochen. Founding member Eike left the band already after the first two albums. The first four albums, ‘Ich-Maschine’, ‘L`Etat et Moi’, ‘Old Nobody’ and ‘Testament’ were the most successful and belong, according to Rolling Stone, to the 50 most important German albums. Following two albums were less successful. After the split, Jochen developed the BLUMFELD sound further, but never could tie on former success. Seven years after the split it is now time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ‘L`Etat et Moi’ album, marking the breakthrough of the band in 1994. http://www.blumfeld.de / https://www.facebook.com/blumfeldoffiziell

Music & Performance
Originally, the show was announced for 20:00. But I guess since there was no support anyway and it was quite early, the decided to wait 30 more minutes. Since the weather was nice, people were standing outside with some beer until around eight. Then the hall filled up quite fast since people were really curious about the show, being presented in the original line-up. The following program was presenting songs of the first two albums. If you’d expect a big show, you were attending the wrong concert. The gig in Münster, and the ones already taking place before, was focusing on the music while the stage setting was sparse and the light effects very reserved, mainly changing a little between red and blue. Sadly, the sound was a bit too dull for a perfect concert experience. But people in the hall did not really care about it since it was the songs they probably grew up with that were most important for them.

The audience really enjoyed the show without being over-enthusiastic though; and also the band seemed to enjoy being onstage. Back to the setlist, it indeed, as announced, was containing mostly songs of the first two albums. Besides that, there was a B-side included an two songs from the ‘Old Nobody’ album, ‘Ein Lied von zwei Menschen’ and ‘Kommst du mit in den Alltag’. Seemed the band really thought about their program for the jubilee tour. And even though the audience was not really outgoing, it was excited and rewarded the band with lots of applause. Several times, a big choir accompanied the band. At the end, anyone was happy to be part of this anniversary. And no one knows if and how BLUMFELD will go on.
